Why Parents Should be Involved when their Children are Learning to Swim

Learning to swim is an exciting milestone for many kids, but parents often sign their kids up for swim lessons without giving much thought to how they can be involved in the Learn to Swim journey. Here are four reasons why parents should take an active role, rather than rely solely on their child’s swim instructor.

  1. You know your child best – Swim Instructors spend just 30 minutes a week with your child. Even if your child attends multiple lessons a week, it’ll take your instructor weeks or months to build trust with your child. Trust that you already share with your child.
  2. You are with them all the time – Sure their swim instructors can teach your child to swim, but they are not around during bath time or pool parties. Kids need consistent practice, and you are the only one who can take advantage of these learning opportunities — their swim instructors can’t.
  3. You can teach them as fast or slow as you want – Swim lessons have a set schedule, and kids don’t. Are your kids having a blast? Keep going. Are they ready to be done for the day? Go ahead and leave early. Swim instructors don’t have that flexibility, even in private swim lessons they must follow a schedule.
  4. Its so rewarding – It feels amazing to watch a child achieve something they have been working towards. And swimming is no different. While I am sure that your child’s swim instructor is thrilled to see them progress, they will probably want to share the excitement with you too.
